Language Usage

The Language Usage courses are comprehensive, integrated grammar courses for grade levels 1-8. This program directs students beginning with early grades in the proper use of the spoken and written English language. Language Usage I, II, and III have tutorial and instructional voice support. Each Language Usage title offers tutoring in the use of the English language through lessons that focus on each part of speech. Course features:

  • Language Usage is presented as a collection of year-long courses
  • All lessons contain a study guide, a practice and mastery test, and an essay or constructed response
  • Lessons include a variety of essay types such as descriptive, persuasive, expository, and letter writing
  • The content in these courses is designed to meet and exceed the requirements of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) for the Standards of English Language Arts
  • Students learn to identify and correctly use nouns, verbs, modifiers, and the other parts of speech.Students learn the importance of sentence construction and identifying sentence parts including simple and complex subjects and predicates, verbs, and phrases
  • Sentence mechanics are addressed in each title
  • Students learn simple capitalization rules and guidelines for capitalization, underlining, and writing dialogue
  • Punctuation lessons offer guidelines for using periods, commas, colons, and other marks, and punctuation for outlines, business and friendly letters, poetry, and direct and indirect quotations

Language Usage I introduces nouns, verbs, conjunctions, and adjectives, introduction to capitalization and punctuation, sentence types, contractions, and abbreviations. 33 lessons. **Fast-Track available



Language Usage II covers singular and plural nouns and verbs, subject/verb agreement, regular and irregular verbs, pronouns, adjectives, adverbs, grammar improvements, identifying double negatives, capitalization, and punctuation.  44 lessons. **Fast-Track available




The Language Usage III course reviews common and proper nouns, verb tenses, transitive and intransitive verbs, contractions, conjunctions, cases, pronouns, sentence structure, word order in sentences, simple and compound sentences, subjects and predicates, adjectives, adverbs, and tricky words. 40 lessons. **Fast-Track available




Language Usage IV reviews noun forms, possessive nouns and pronouns, present, past, and past participle verbs, predicate adjectives, demonstrative adjectives, prepositional phrases, introduction to sentence diagramming, parts of speech review, using direct quotations, importance of parallelism, and correct placement of modifiers. 47 lessons. **Fast-Track available



In Language Usage V the course continues with a review of nouns, review of verbs including troublesome and irregular verbs, subjective, objective, and possessive pronouns, apostrophes, punctuation of bibliographies, titles, letters, dialogue, comparative and superlative modifiers, direct objects, identifying shifts in tense, diagramming simple and compound sentences, review of parts of speech, problem words, parallelism, and review of capitalization. 45 lessons. **Fast-Track available



Language Usage VI covers concrete, abstract, and compound nouns, subject and object pronouns, compound direct objects, verb phrases, principal verb parts, positive and negative comparisons, sentence mechanics, diagramming, and fragments. 44 lessons. **Fast-Track available




Language Usage VII introduces students to the writing process, review of all parts of speech, active and passive voice, progressive tense verbs, interrogative, demonstrative, relative, and indefinite pronouns, sentence fragments, run-on sentences, phrases and clauses, coordinating conjunctions, verbals, and review of punctuation. 38 lessons. **Fast-Track available



Language Usage VIII reviews all noun types, pronouns, verbs, degrees of comparison for adjectives and adverbs, participial phrases, restrictive and non-restrictive clauses, diagramming, punctuation, colons, semicolons, quotations, letter writing, shifts in tense, point of view, and problem words. 45 lessons. **Fast-Track available


The Home Learning institute offers a variety off courses for grades 1 -12.  This is an affordable choice that offers a good degree of flexibility in the way that the material is delivered to meet your families needs.  Most of the material is self corrected using the interactive training tools but assignments and essays will still need to be assessed and corrected by the parent.
