In most states, homeschooling is an alternative to public or private school options. The parent has control over how their child learns, curriculum choices, testing and more. This is an invaluable option when parents want more control over their child’s learning. Some states even allow “home-schools” to issue their own diploma and transcripts.
Parents cite two main motivations for homeschooling their children: dissatisfaction with the local schools and the interest in increased involvement with (and greater control over) their children’s learning and development. Parents’ dissatisfaction with available schools includes concerns about the school environment, the quality of academic instruction, the curriculum, and bullying as well as lack of faith in the school’s ability to cater to their child’s special needs. Some parents homeschool in order to have greater control over what and how their children are taught, to better cater for children’s individual aptitudes and abilities adequately, to provide a specific religious or moral instruction, and to take advantage of the efficiency of one-to-one instruction, which allows the child to spend more time on childhood activities, socializing, and non-academic learning.
In many states, you have the option of enrolling in a Private “Umbrella” school. The benefits of private umbrella school enrollment are:
- Your child is enrolled in a private school, so you do not have to follow that state’s homeschooling laws
- You will not have to abide by testing requirements, Intent Letters, reporting, etc
- You will not have to submit a portfolio or examples of work to your local school district
- You do not have to have your curriculum choice approved by your local school district.
Most private umbrella schools allow you to use the curriculum of your choice including the courses offered by Home Learning Institute. Some private umbrella schools also offer High School Diplomas. A Google search for your state’s private umbrella schools should give you a list of schooling options.
Online Public School Option
Some school districts offer free online curriculum to their students. In many districts, students are allowed to complete their courses at home. The downfall to this option is that students are required to complete their work on the School’s schedule and not their own schedule. School teachers are required to grade your student’s work. Parents are not allowed to choose their child’s curriculum nor grade their child’s lessons. Parents have no control over what their student is learning. If a child has questions pertaining to the lessons, the child may be waiting for days for help from their assigned teacher, since these teachers are working with dozens of students at the same time. In addition, there are limited curriculum options. Children learn in different ways and your options are limited with the online courses offered by public schools. The benefits to online public school are: they are usually free to local students; high school diploma options are available; courses completed online can usually be transferred if the child returns back to his or her public school.
Online Private School Option
There are many accredited private schools that cater to home-bound students. In order to be accredited by a regional accrediting agency, tuition costs are involved because regionally accredited schools are required to use certified teachers. Parents will not have control over the curriculum or teaching. Tuition costs typically range from $300-$400 per COURSE. The benefits to online private schools are: high school diploma options are usually available for an additional fee; the child receives help from certified teachers; parents are usually allowed some involvement in their child’s education, usually as Learning Coaches.
